FAQs

I thought dairy was bad for dogs.

Yogurt contains about half the lactose as milk (because the culture process breaks down the milk sugar lactose). Also, the live and active cultures create lactase, which is the enzyme that those who are lactose-intolerant lack. However, not all yogurts are equal. Ours contains 5 strains of live and active cultures, is fat-free and very low in natural sugars. It’s all natural, rbST-free and does NOT have artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives or colors.

Where are your treats manufactured?

Our treats are carefully manufactured in an ice cream factory in Boulder, Colorado. Team USA!

I don’t live in Colorado. Can I get The Bear & The Rat treats?

We are adding new retailers every day! If you’d like to see The Bear & The Rat in a store near you, please email us and we’ll contact the store If you are a distributor, we’d love to talk to you about our line. Please contact us at info@cooltreatsfordogs.com or give us a shout at 888-528-0094!

How many live and active cultures are in your frozen yogurt treats?

There are many probiotic strands in our good-for-them treats, which are listed below. The minimum number of total microorganisms in one pint is equivalent to 100 million colony forming units per gram (CFU/g).

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus bulgaricus

Bifidobacterium bifidus

Streptococcus thermophilus

Are your treats only available in a 16 oz pint?

We’ve just launched a 4-pack and a single cup, in addition to our 16 oz pints!

What is the organic rice maltodextrin and stabilizers used for in your treats?

The organic rice maltodextrin, which is made from rice; NOT corn in our treats is used to provide a creamier texture so that it’s easier for the human to scoop out the treat. However, we do not use a lot. Also, we do not heat our product when manufacturing which would help activate these ingredients, so we still advise our customers to thaw the treat for 15 minutes.

DO NOT PUT THE PINT CONTAINER IN THE MICROWAVE! HEAT WILL KILL THOSE WONDERFULLY BENEFICIAL-TO-YOUR-PUP, PROBIOTIC CULTURES!

The stabilizers act as emulsifiers to minimize ice crystals, hold the ingredients together and improve the texture.

Why is the frozen treat difficult to scoop?

We do not add sugar to our product (sugar doesn’t freeze, so our product ends up being quite dense, which does have its advantages!) If you get into the habit of putting your pint out 15 minutes before scooping, all will be well.

What is the proper serving size for my dog?

USE DIRECTIONS:

1/2 cup (4 fl oz) for 100+ lb dog

1/4 cup (2 fl oz) for 60-100 lb dog

1/8 cup (1 fl oz) for 25-60 lb dog

1/16 cup (.5 fl oz) for 0-25 lb dog

To scoop a serving for your dog, just let the product defrost with the lid off for 20 minutes on the counter. The scoop into his or her fave dish! Do not microwave.

KEEP FROZEN. DOG TREAT ONLY. NOT INTENDED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION (though our product is made from human grade ingredients)

How should my dog eat it?

All dogs are different. The Rat carefully licks his frozen yogurt while The Bear nibbles/licks it. It’s important to know your dog. You wouldn’t eat a whole scoop of ice cream in one bite and neither should your dog. If you think your dog’s going to chomp with gusto, break the scoop up into pieces in his/her bowl before serving! We recommend that you give your dog a few licks straight from the pint or cup to give him a clue that he’s supposed to lick, lick, lick this frozen treat!

Why is your company called The Bear & The Rat?

Our founder’s dogs are the mascots of our company. Quimby is a Lhasa Apso who growls like a BEAR. And Laika is a RAT TERRIER! They are each 13 lbs but though small, they are dynamic and dramatic power pups!
